How Do I Pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee?

An individual who is immigrating to the United States and will be admitted as a lawful permanent resident must pay the $165 USCIS Immigrant Fee. This fee must be paid online through the USCIS Electronic Immigration System (USCIS ELIS). It is strongly encouraged that this fee be paid after receiving the immigrant visa packet from the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate and before you depart for the United States.

Paying this fee online prior to your departure will ensure that you will receive your permanent resident Green Card without delay.

What is the USCIS Immigrant Fee?

The USCIS Immigrant Fee of $165 is payment for the costs related to immigrant visas issued by the Department of State at U.S. Embassies and U.S. Consulates abroad. This $165 fee covers the cost of processing, filing, and maintaining immigrant visa packets, plus the cost of producing permanent resident Green Cards.

What is the process for paying the USCIS Immigrant Fee?

After you attend the interview abroad at the U.S. Consulate or United States Embassy you will receive a handout that explains how to pay the USCIS immigrant fee along with all the information you must enter in the USCIS ELIS system.

You must visit and follow the directions online to create an account in order to pay the required fee. You must provide either a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or debit card; or a U.S. checking account and routing number to pay the $165 fee with USCIS ELIS.

What happens after I arrive in the United States?

When you arrive to the United States, you must present your Immigrant Visa Packet at the U.S. Port of Entry. You will then be admitted as a lawful permanent resident by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

USCIS will then verify the payment you’ve made with USCIS ELIS and then mail your Green Card to the address you provided to the Department of State at the time of the interview. You should receive this card within 30 days after being admitted to the United States.
